Tent State University

Tent State University is a national movement (started here at Rutgers in 2003) that believes education must be a right, not a privilege. Tent State wants to dispel the myth of a "budget crisis," which is used as an excuse year after year to raise tuition. Instead, we believe the real crisis is one of values and leadership, which leads to state and national spending priorities that favor war and corporate welfare over social necessities such as education. By building an educational alternative, Tent State aims to challenge the undemocratic decision-making process and structure of our universities and of our society. Tent State creates a space where students, faculty, staff, and community members and organizations can come together, work together, learn together and practice democracy together. We believe in full community access to public higher education and in a diverse public university. We oppose tuition hikes, cuts in public funding, and the privatization of public universities that limit access to higher education. Last but not least, we recognize that wars of aggression are antithetical to education, both morally and financially, and we call for an end to the U.S.-led War in Iraq.
